VPS showing high latency to your broker, how to find why
The short answer
A Virtual Private Server (VPS) keeps MetaTrader 4 (MT4) or MetaTrader 5 (MT5) running when your computer is off. It still shows a high delay if the VPS and your broker sit in different cities. A trading proxy does not shorten that distance or lower ping.
Your VPS still shows a high delay to your broker.
You click Buy or Close through Remote Desktop as a fast candle moves. You rented a VPS to sit close to your broker, yet the delay is still high.
By the time your click reaches the VPS and the broker answers, the price has moved. Why it matters, you are paying to be close, and you may not be.
A VPS only cuts the delay if it sits near your broker’s server.
A VPS keeps MT4 or MT5 running when your home computer is off. It does not automatically sit in the same city as your broker’s trade server.
Two things set the delay you see inside your VPS. One is the distance between the VPS city and your broker’s server city. The other is the path your data takes through your VPS company’s network.
More RAM or processor cores don’t change either one, so a bigger plan won’t fix it. If you trade by hand through Remote Desktop, every click also crosses the distance to the VPS. See our manual VPS trading guide.
Four checks inside the VPS show whether distance or the path is the problem.
Run them inside the VPS, because that is where your platform connects from. The next section says what each result means.
Four checks to run inside the VPS
- 01
Read the broker server name in MT4 or MT5
Inside the VPS, open MT4 or MT5 and go to Tools → Options → Server. Note the server name your account is connected to, or use our MT4 server location lookup.
- 02
Find which city your broker runs that server in
Ask your broker’s support which city hosts that specific trade server. Compare it with the city you picked when you rented the VPS.
- 03
Run a 30-packet ping test
Open Command Prompt inside the VPS and run
ping -n 30followed by your broker’s server address, if it answers ping. Compare the lowest, highest and average time. What it tells you. If even the lowest time is high, distance is the cause. Lost replies point to the path.
- 04
Run tracert to see where your data goes
Run
tracertto the same address and read the cities along the way. Our guide to reading tracert lines explains each line.
Each result tells you whether to move the VPS, change host or change how you trade.
- Your VPS and your broker’s server sit in different cities. Distance is the cause. Move the VPS to your broker’s city, or pick a broker server in the VPS city.
- Same city, but tracert shows another city. Your VPS host routes your data out of town first. Send the result to your VPS host, or test another host.
- The VPS delay is low, but Remote Desktop lags. The delay is between you and the VPS. If you trade by hand, run the platform on your own computer. See Traders Proxy or a VPS.
- The delay is steady, but data is lost on the way. Report the loss to your VPS host. You can also test whether Traders Proxy helps.
Traders Proxy won’t lower your VPS ping, but it lets you trade on your own screen.
Here is what changes with us. We don’t promise lower ping. Distance sets the minimum. Traders Proxy does not shorten the distance to your broker.
Whether MT4 runs on your computer or a VPS, physical distance stays the same. Distance sets the minimum time to your broker and back.
Trading by hand, you don’t need Remote Desktop. Run MT4 or MT5 on your own screen and paste Traders Proxy into Tools → Options → Server → Proxy….
Why it matters. Your clicks no longer cross the distance to a remote screen first.
Choose your broker’s city in your dashboard so our server there makes its own, separate connection to your broker. Any packet lost on that leg is recovered locally inside that city.
Nagle’s algorithm is off so small order packets leave as they arrive. If your broker prohibits proxies, don’t use one.
You cannot set up a proxy while your platform is disconnected in a live trade. Paste the four values while the market is calm, before the next release.
Frequently asked questions
Will upgrading my VPS RAM or processor lower my ping to my broker?
No. RAM and processor power decide how many terminals and charts the VPS can run. They don’t change the distance or the path to your broker’s server.
Does Traders Proxy change the ping shown on my VPS or computer?
No. A proxy cannot make light travel faster or shorten the distance to your broker. Your ping is unchanged.
How do I lower my VPS ping to my broker?
Only two things shorten the distance. Move the VPS to the same city as your broker’s trade server, or choose a broker server in your VPS city.
Can I use Traders Proxy inside a VPS?
MT4 and MT5 on a Windows VPS have the same Tools → Options → Server → Proxy… dialog as a home computer. It does not change the VPS ping, so test direct versus proxied first.
When should I keep my VPS instead of switching to Traders Proxy?
Keep your VPS whenever an Expert Advisor (EA) must run unattended with your own computer turned off.

Manual trading on a Windows VPS adds a remote-desktop step that 0 ms hides
“Synchronization is always a one-direction process — the local platform environment is moved to the virtual platform, but never vice versa.”
How local trading avoids it. Your platform stays on your own computer and monitors, so clicks and hotkeys never wait on a remote-desktop window.
- Platform stays on your own computerPrimary
Where it stops. We add a step between your computer and your broker, and we do not promise lower ping. Distance between you and your broker still counts.
The rented Windows VPS itself freezes, spikes, crashes or goes down
“Random ping spikes (1ms → 30–50ms). Short disconnect/reconnect events in the MT5 journal. CPU usage spikes despite low EA load. Is this just shared VPS "noisy neighbor" behavior?”
How local trading avoids it. There's no rented Windows machine in your setup to freeze or go down. Your platform runs on your own computer.
- Platform stays on your own computerPrimary
- Services restart themselves after a crashSupporting
Where it stops. Your platform runs on your own computer, so there is no remote desktop to freeze. If a service on our server restarts, live connections reconnect.
EAs on several terminals or brokers with one rented terminal per account and a DLL ban
“One rented terminal can work only with one User's trading account.”
Why a proxy does not change this. Traders Proxy is for people who run their platform on their own computer. It does not run robots for you.
Where it stops. Does not run an EA while your computer is off. Not a hosting service.
MT4/MT5 or cTrader trade alerts and signal bots cannot reach Telegram
“Enable proxy server — allow the use of a proxy server when connecting to the trade server.”
Why a proxy does not change this. Telegram in one tap works in the Telegram app. It does not route your trading robots' messages.
Where it stops. Alert bots and signal copiers make their own web calls. Those calls are not guaranteed to use your platform’s proxy setting.
