Forex session overlap times in your time zone

The short answer

Check forex session overlap times in UTC or in my timezone table below. London and New York overlap from 8 am New York to 5 pm London. In UTC, that is 13:00 to 17:00 in winter and 12:00 to 16:00 in summer.

In an overlap, two trading centres are open at once

An overlap is when two trading centres are both in business hours. It runs from the later city’s opening to the earlier city’s close. Why it matters, more prices and orders arrive at once, so a weak connection shows then.

The table gives each overlap in city time and in UTC, so you can put it in any calendar.

The three session overlaps, in city time and in UTC
OverlapStartsEndsUTC, November to MarchUTC, April to October
London and New York8 am in New York5 pm in London13:00 to 17:0012:00 to 16:00
Tokyo and London8 am in London6 pm in Tokyo08:00 to 09:0007:00 to 09:00
Sydney and Tokyo9 am in Tokyo5 pm in Sydney00:00 to 06:0000:00 to 07:00, until early October

The city times hold all year. The months are approximate, each UTC window shifts on the day one of its cities changes its clocks.

The base hours come from Axi’s session table. The seasonal UTC windows are our arithmetic from each city’s clock rules. Session hours are a convention, and other sources differ by an hour.

So treat each edge as roughly an hour either way.

Find the overlap in your own time, so you are ready before it starts

For London and New York, read your zone from this table. We worked it out from the UTC hours above and each zone’s rules in the IANA time zone database.

The London and New York overlap, in local time
Where you areNovember to MarchApril to October
New York08:00 to 12:0008:00 to 12:00
London13:00 to 17:0013:00 to 17:00
Central Europe (Paris, Berlin)14:00 to 18:0014:00 to 18:00
Johannesburg (UTC+2)15:00 to 19:0014:00 to 18:00
India (UTC+5:30)18:30 to 22:3017:30 to 21:30
Singapore and Hong Kong (UTC+8)21:00 to 01:0020:00 to 00:00
Tokyo and Seoul (UTC+9)22:00 to 02:0021:00 to 01:00

When London and New York are out of step, the window lasts five hours. London and Central Europe start an hour earlier, while New York ends an hour later. Other rows run from the earlier start to the later end.

For any other zone, or another overlap, use a world clock.

  1. 01

Add the two cities to your world clock

Add both cities of the overlap to the clock app on your phone or computer. You can then read both against your own time.

  2. 02

Read the start and the end

Take the two city times from the first table. For London and New York, that is 8 am in New York and 5 pm in London.

  3. 03

    Apply each city’s gap

Your world clock shows how far New York is ahead of or behind you today. Apply that to 8 am. Do the same for 5 pm in London.

The gap already includes each city’s clock changes, so you never look up a date.

Clock changes move each overlap by an hour, twice a year

Each session follows local business hours. So its UTC window moves an hour when that city changes its clocks. Japan does not change its clocks at all.

The US changes on the second Sunday of March and first Sunday of November (NIST’s clock rules). The UK changes on the last Sunday of March and October (GOV.UK clock changes). Between those dates, the overlap lasts five hours.

So a fixed reminder in UTC can be an hour out for half the year.

Which forex session is open now lists each city’s hours and change dates.

London and New York trade the most forex, and the US jobs report lands in their overlap

They are the two largest centres. The UK handles about 38% of foreign exchange trading and the US about 19% (BIS survey, April 2025). The US jobs report also lands in the overlap, at 8:30 am New York time (BLS schedule).

So it is the overlap to test your connection in.

Test your connection in an overlap and outside one

This page tells you when two trading centres are both open, not how your connection behaves then. For that, check your delay in an overlap and outside one. Check your delay hour by hour shows how.

Traders Proxy works with any platform that has a proxy setting, including MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5, TradingView Desktop and Optuma. Each platform’s maker decides which of its connections use that setting.

Our server opens its own connection to your broker and recovers lost data inside your broker’s city. Trading ports go first when our server is busy.

That helps only on the connection between our server and your broker. Your connection to our server stays as it is.

Ping is the time data takes there and back. We don’t promise lower ping. Distance sets the minimum. If your broker prohibits proxies, don’t use one.

A backtest runs on your own machine, so no internet link can lose a piece of data during a news release. In live trading, one lost piece holds up every price update and order behind it. Everything waits while your computer sends it again across the world.

You cannot paste four values into your platform while your chart is already frozen in a live trade. Set it up today while the market is calm. Then time it on your own screen during the next release.

Frequently asked questions

What are the London and New York overlap times in UTC?

From November to March, 13:00 to 17:00. From April to October, 12:00 to 16:00. In the weeks when the two cities are out of step, it runs from 12:00 to 17:00.

Do the overlap times change with daylight saving?

Yes, in UTC. Each session follows local business hours, so its UTC window moves an hour when that city changes its clocks. In city time, nothing moves.

How long is the London and New York overlap?

Four hours for most of the year. It lasts five hours in the weeks when only one of the two countries has changed its clocks.

Are these the official market hours?

No. Session hours are a convention, and sources differ by an hour. Your broker’s own trading hours decide when you can place an order.

MetaTrader 4 & 5Avoids by design

MQL5 VPS location can't be chosen and its ping 'jumped'

“Please don't mix up your concepts. 2ms may be for the Ping response time, or in other words, the latency of the network communication. However, there is much more that the server has to do besides the network response”

How local trading avoids it. Pick a server city in your dashboard and switch whenever you like.

  • City switchingPrimary

Where it stops. Pick a server city in your dashboard and paste the new server value into your platform. Switching city changes the address your broker sees.

Windows VPS & RoutingAvoids by design

Remote desktop is laggy on a Mac or a very wide screen (client-side rendering, not distance)

“Try reducing the resolution on the remote session. Drop it down to 19220 x 1080 and see if that helps.”

How local trading avoids it. Your platform runs on your own computer, so there's no remote-desktop window to lag.

  • Platform stays on your own computerPrimary

Where it stops. Needs a version of your platform that runs on your computer. Anything you still reach by remote desktop is as laggy as before.

cTraderWhen not to use a proxy

cTrader picks a far or 'wrong' Spotware proxy and the trader cannot choose (Sydney-3, Netherlands, Jakarta-2, London-6 from Korea)

“I've tried, and it seems that only HTTP proxies can connect.”

Why a proxy can backfire here. cTrader for Windows has a proxy setting and Traders Proxy supports it over HTTP. cTrader still chooses its own servers.

  • Built-in HTTP proxy loginBoundary

Where it stops. In cTrader on Windows, the Connection proxy setting routes your connection to Spotware’s cloud. Spotware still picks its own cloud node on the far side.

MetaTrader 4 & 5When not to use a proxy

Shared server address where a broker block affects every account on that server

“I have a small VPS service in Thailand, where I share IP internet to save costs. Suddenly, all MT4 in the node started showing a "connection failed" error.”

Why a proxy can backfire here. Your broker sees one steady address, our server’s, shared by people on a Traders Proxy plan in that city.

  • One steady addressBoundary
  • City switchingSupporting

Where it stops. Our server address is shared by people on a Traders Proxy plan in that city. Switch city in your dashboard if a broker blocks that address.
