What is MTProto?
The short answer
MTProto is Telegram’s own way of talking to its servers. An MTProto proxy is a server your Telegram app connects through instead of connecting directly. Ours is on our 2-device and 5-device plans, for Telegram only.
What does MTProto do? It encrypts your Telegram messages on the way to Telegram.
MTProto is the set of rules Telegram designed for its apps to talk to its servers. Telegram’s documentation describes three parts. One turns your requests into data, one encrypts it, and one moves it to Telegram.
Why it matters. The signal channels you read travel encrypted between Telegram and your app, with or without a proxy.
Telegram says its major apps use version 2.0 and calls version 1.0 outdated. The rules are public, and Telegram’s own apps are open source, so anyone can check how they work.
What is an MTProto proxy? A server your Telegram app connects through.
A proxy is a server your app connects through instead of connecting directly. Telegram’s proxy page lists two types for its apps, MTProto and SOCKS5.
An MTProto proxy needs a server, a port and a secret. That secret works like a password. Anyone with the link can use that proxy, so keep it private.

Telegram uses one saved proxy at a time, so if your channels stop updating, check that one first. Plans and limits are on the Telegram platform page.
With Traders Proxy you add either type in one tap from your dashboard. If your link leaks, you can replace it yourself, without waiting for us.
Is an MTProto proxy a VPN? No, it covers Telegram alone.
Telegram’s proxy page says a VPN covers all of a device’s traffic. A proxy serves specific apps instead. An MTProto proxy covers Telegram alone, so other apps stay on your normal internet.
Traders Proxy or a VPN compares the two for a trading connection.
What can an MTProto proxy see? Where you connect from, but not your messages.
Telegram says a proxy operator cannot read your messages, because Telegram traffic is encrypted. It also says the operator can record your IP address. That is Telegram’s statement about this kind of proxy in general.
So it matters who runs the proxy you read your signals through.
For our own Telegram proxy, we never record what is in your Telegram traffic. We can’t read Telegram’s own encryption either. Our promise never to decrypt does not cover this proxy type, and no one outside us has checked its code yet.
Do you need a proxy to use Telegram? No, Telegram works without one.
A proxy only changes which server your Telegram app connects through. It adds one more server between you and Telegram. With us, the reason is convenience. Telegram in one tap, on the same plan as your platform.
Telegram says it spreads its servers across several data centres. It publishes no locations for them. So we make no claim about distance, and no speed promise for Telegram.
Who wrote our Telegram proxy? It is built on an open-source project.
We build our Telegram proxy on the open-source mtg project. The software that connects your trading platform to your broker is separate, and we wrote that ourselves.
So what this site says about your trading connection does not apply to Telegram.
A backtest never loses a piece of data on the internet, so it does not drop your connection during a news release. In live trading, one lost piece holds up every price update and order behind it. Everything waits while your computer sends it again across the world.
You cannot paste four values into your platform while your terminal is already disconnected in a live trade. Set it up today while the market is calm. Then time it on your own screen during the next release.

Is MTProto the same as the other proxy choice in Telegram?
No, MTProto is Telegram’s own protocol, while SOCKS5 is a general proxy type. Telegram’s proxy screen offers both. With us, MTProto is on the 2-device and 5-device plans, and the SOCKS5 link is on every plan.
Is the MTProto specification public?
Yes. Telegram documents it on its own site, and says its apps are open source.
Does an MTProto proxy break Telegram’s encryption?
Telegram says a proxy operator cannot read your messages, because Telegram traffic is encrypted. That is Telegram’s statement about this kind of proxy in general. We can’t read Telegram’s own encryption either, and no one outside Traders Proxy has checked our Telegram proxy’s code yet.
What is MTProto 2.0?
It is the current version. Telegram says its major apps use it and calls version 1.0 outdated.
Can I use an MTProto proxy for my trading platform?
No. It works for Telegram only. MetaTrader 4 (MT4) and MetaTrader 5 (MT5) use the proxy values from your dashboard in their own proxy setting.

Why a proxy does not change this. Telegram in one tap works in the Telegram app. It does not route your trading robots' messages.
