MT4 proxy setup on Windows

The short answer

To send MetaTrader 4 (MT4) on Windows through Traders Proxy, open Tools → Options → Server and tick Enable proxy server. Press Proxy…, enter your four values, then press Test and OK. MT4 connects to our server, and our server connects to your broker.

Our server in your broker’s city opens a local connection to your broker.

When you click Buy, your order crosses the internet in small pieces of data. If one drops, your chart and next order wait while your computer recovers it. The farther you are from your broker, the longer each wait.

Traders Proxy sits between MetaTrader 4 (MT4) and your broker. MT4 connects to our nearest server, and our server in your broker’s city connects to your broker.

If data drops on that local link, our server recovers it inside your broker’s city. Trading ports go first when a server is busy, and broker addresses stay warm in memory.

What do you need before you start?

  • MT4 on Windows, on a current build, that connects to your broker without the proxy. Then any later problem is in the proxy setting.
  • A Traders Proxy plan, with the server nearest you and your broker’s city picked under Connect in your dashboard.
  • The Server, Login and Password rows from Your values for your platform, on the MT4 tab.

Copy the values instead of typing them, because one wrong character fails the test. The login and password are yours from Traders Proxy, not your broker’s.

How do you set the proxy in MT4 on Windows?

Warning. Check your broker’s terms

If your broker prohibits proxies, don’t use one. Traders Proxy doesn’t change what your broker allows.

MT4 proxy setup on Windows in five steps

  1. 01

    Open the settings

In MT4, choose Tools → Options, or press Ctrl+O. Then open the Server tab. The proxy setting lives there, inside MT4, so your other programs keep your normal internet.

  2. 02

    Turn the proxy on

Tick Enable proxy server, which switches on the Proxy… button. Then press it.

  3. 03

    Enter your four values

Choose the type first, because each type has its own port. Then enter the server, port, login and password in the order the dialog asks for them.

    Type
    SOCKS5
    Server
The server from your dashboard, with the port
    Login
    Your Traders Proxy login
    Password
    Your Traders Proxy password

MetaQuotes’ help doesn’t say how the port is entered, so follow the layout you see. HTTP also works. We don’t support SOCKS4, which the dialog also lists.

  4. 04

    Press Test, then OK

Press Test, so a wrong value shows up now and not in the middle of a trade. An error means a setting is wrong, so check each value. When it passes, press OK so the settings take effect.

  5. 05

    Check the connection

MT4 should show a live connection to your broker, with prices moving in Market Watch. Your dashboard should list your PC as a connected device, which tells you MT4 reached our server.

MetaQuotes doesn’t say whether MT4 needs a restart. If it doesn’t reconnect, close it and open it again.

Your other apps, your own internet and the distance to your broker don’t change.

Only the trading app you set up uses Traders Proxy. Everything else stays on your normal internet, so streaming and downloads don’t use your plan’s data.

Ping is the time data takes to go there and back. We don’t promise lower ping. Distance sets the minimum. No proxy can move your broker closer.

Our part helps only on the connection between our server and your broker, and it doesn’t shorten the distance. Data lost between you and our server is recovered between those two. If your own Wi-Fi is weak, we can’t make it stronger.

MetaQuotes doesn’t say whether news or chart history use the setting. We claim nothing either way.

What if Test shows an error?

  • Test shows an error. MetaQuotes says that means a setting is wrong. Copy your four values again, and check the type is SOCKS5 or HTTP.
  • The type and port don’t match. Your dashboard lists one port for each type. Use the port for the type you chose.
  • Test passes but MT4 doesn’t reconnect. Close MT4 and open it again.
  • MT4 can’t connect even without the proxy. Check your build. MetaQuotes says builds older than 1440 couldn’t connect to broker servers after 1 July 2025.
  • A firewall or security program is in the way. It can block the connection, and Test will show an error. Check its allow list for MT4 instead of switching it off.
  • You can’t find the Proxy… button. Tick Enable proxy server first. If it’s still missing, try the standard terminal from MetaQuotes’ download page.

Still stuck? Read why MT4 won’t connect.

Frequently asked questions

Does the setup differ on Windows 11?

No. MetaQuotes’ help doesn’t name Windows 11, and nothing in it changes the steps. The proxy dialog belongs to MT4, not to Windows.

Where do I type the port?

MetaQuotes’ MT4 help doesn’t say. Follow the order the dialog asks for, then press Test to check.

Do I need administrator rights or a switched-off antivirus?

No. Nothing in MetaQuotes’ help asks for either. A security program can block the connection, and Test will then show an error, so check its allow list instead.

Can I try it on a demo account first?

Yes. A demo account is a low-risk first run. Press Test, then check that prices move in Market Watch.

Will my broker mind?

Check your broker’s terms. If your broker prohibits proxies, don’t use one. Traders Proxy doesn’t change what your broker allows.

MetaTrader 4 & 5Solves

Generic or free proxies fail MetaTrader's proxy Test button

“I keep getting the message "Proxy test failed" no matter what proxy settings I try to set.”

How our system handles it. Use SOCKS5 or HTTP, whichever your platform offers. Enter our server, login and password in MetaTrader’s own Proxy window.

  • Built-in SOCKS5 loginPrimary
  • Built-in HTTP proxy loginSupporting

Where it stops. MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5 support SOCKS5 and HTTP (not SOCKS4). A passing Test confirms the route reaches our server.

MetaTrader 4 & 5Solves

MetaTrader 5 will not use a proxy running on the same computer

“that proxy setting is working on MT4, so the problem is from MT5 not proxy”

How our system handles it. You don't need a tunnel app on your computer. Your platform connects to our server through its own Proxy setting.

  • Own separate connection to your brokerPrimary
  • Built-in SOCKS5 loginPrimary

Where it stops. Your platform connects through its built-in Proxy window, with no extra app to install. Some MetaTrader 5 builds have separate proxy-window bugs.

MetaTrader 4 & 5Not a proxy problem

The platform's proxy setting does not cover everything (WebRequest, MQL5.community, Market)

“Using a SOCKS proxy in a browser, I can access the site without issues. Using the same proxy in the terminal, I still can't log in.”

Why a proxy does not change this. Only the trading app you set up uses Traders Proxy. Everything else stays on your normal internet.

  • Only the app you set up is routedBoundary

Where it stops. Only the trading app you set up uses Traders Proxy. Expert Advisor web calls, custom DLLs and Market downloads may still use your normal internet.

cTraderNot a proxy problem

cTrader phone app works on Wi-Fi but not on one mobile carrier

“We got some reports of issues on some providers and it seems the traffic is blocked by the ISP. You should contact your ISP regarding this issue.”

Why a proxy does not change this. Traders Proxy works with platforms that have a proxy setting, such as cTrader for Windows over HTTP. The cTrader phone app is not covered.

Where it stops. Phone app untested, so we make no claim.
