Why MT4 won’t connect or shows waiting for update
The short answer
When MetaTrader 4 (MT4) won't connect, inspect your bottom status bar first. Wrong trade servers, invalid passwords, or versions below 1440 stop connection attempts. If network drops stall your feed, Traders Proxy recovers packets inside your broker's city.
What each message on MT4 status bar means
You open MetaTrader 4 (MT4) before a market release and check your charts. The bottom corner shows No connection, or your chart stays frozen on Waiting for update.
The status bar message identifies the exact fault so you avoid troubleshooting the wrong component. MetaTrader 5 (MT5) presents similar diagnostic states.
- No connection. Your terminal cannot establish a network socket with the trade server. Check the broker server address and network path.
- Invalid account. The network connection succeeded, but login authorisation failed. Re-enter your account number and trading password.
- Common error. The platform encountered an internal socket or cache error. Refresh the broker server list or restart the software.
- Waiting for update. The platform lacks historic candle data for that symbol. Drag the symbol from Market Watch directly onto the chart.
These definitions reflect standard broker documentation. MetaQuotes does not publish formal status definitions in retail documentation.
Why MT4 fails to connect to broker trade servers
Connecting requires both network transport and account authorisation. MT4 fails when login credentials, server definitions, or proxy values are incorrect.
Connection attempts also fail when intermediate network hops drop data. Wireless interference, provider routing blocks, and broker downtime all produce identical disconnect indicators.
Four initial checks to identify configuration errors
Open the Journal tab inside the Terminal window. It records every connection attempt with a precise millisecond timestamp.
Four checks in sequence
- 01
Confirm account number and trade server
Select Login to Trade Account from the File menu. Enter your account number, password, and the exact trade server specified in your broker account details.
- 02
Verify your terminal build version
Navigate to Help → About. MetaQuotes ended support for older terminals. MT4 builds older than 1440 cannot connect to broker servers.
- 03
Test proxy settings if enabled
Open Tools → Options → Server and click the Proxy button. Press the Test button to verify your configuration against the target host.
- 04
Disable proxy for a direct login test
Uncheck the Enable proxy server box and attempt a standard direct login.
If MT4 connects directly, examine your proxy configuration values. If it still fails, the problem lies in your account credentials or network.
Verifying your Traders Proxy configuration in MT4
If MT4 connected normally before adding a proxy, review these four settings. Our setup guide walks through each setting step by step.
- Protocol type. Select
SOCKS5orHTTP. Do not selectSOCKS4, which our service does not support. - Server and port. Copy both values directly from your dashboard. If you switched server cities, previous hostnames stop working.
- Credentials. Use your separate proxy trading password from your dashboard, not your broker password or portal billing password.
- Device limits. Your dashboard lists active sessions in real time. If you reach your plan limit, close unneeded sessions.
If connection tests continue failing, verify your credentials carefully before attempting further logins.
If settings match and tests fail, local security software may be blocking outbound proxy traffic. Check your firewall permissions before contacting support.
Three tests to separate provider issues from broker downtime
Three isolation tests
- 01
Connect through a mobile phone hotspot
Switch your computer to mobile phone data and log in with proxy settings disabled.
Connecting successfully over mobile data confirms your fixed broadband network is blocking the broker route.
- 02
Disable background VPN software
Turn off any general commercial VPN and retry connecting to your broker.
Commercial VPN services frequently share flagged IP addresses that broker firewalls automatically block.
- 03
Contact your broker trade desk
If MT4 fails across multiple independent networks, contact your broker. Support can verify server status and confirm your account standing.
How Traders Proxy assists once MT4 establishes connection
Traders Proxy operates between MT4 and your broker. You enter four values into MT4 proxy settings without installing local background software.
Traders Proxy helps once MT4 authenticates. It cannot repair incorrect passwords, outdated builds, local Wi-Fi drops, or broker server outages.
Our server operates in your broker's financial data centre city, maintaining a direct connection to the broker. Dropped packets on that stretch recover locally inside that city.
We never simulate connection handshakes. MT4 shows connected status only when your broker answers.
If our server in your broker's city becomes unreachable, MT4 reports the disconnection immediately. We never reroute your traffic to another city without your direction.
If your computer drops offline, our server clears stale connections rapidly. Your platform can reconnect immediately from your network up to your plan limit.
We do not promise lower ping because physical distance sets the floor. Configure your proxy values while markets are calm. If your broker prohibits proxies, do not use one.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my MT4 chart say waiting for update?
The chart lacks historical candle data for that symbol. Dragging the symbol from Market Watch onto the chart forces an immediate update.
Do I need to reinstall MT4?
Rarely as a first measure. Verify your login credentials, server entry, and build number first. If your build is below 1440, download your broker's current installer.
Why can't MT4 connect when websites load normally?
Web browsers use ordinary web ports that rarely face filtering. MT4 connects over specific trading ports that firewalls, routers, or internet providers can restrict.
Does Traders Proxy resolve an MT4 that will not connect?
Not if your credentials or broker are at fault. If your local network blocks broker IP addresses, routing through our server restores connectivity.
Do brokers accept proxy connections?
Review your broker terms before connecting. If your broker prohibits proxies, do not use one. Your broker sees our server IP address in its own data centre city.
When should I contact broker support?
Contact your broker when MT4 fails to connect across both home broadband and mobile phone data. Support can confirm maintenance windows or account holds.

'Ping failed' and drops with disconnects every few minutes, re-login loops and dropped sessions
“hey guys,..do you have any ideas why my MT4 often disconected in a several minute or sometime ping failed reported on journal tab. By the way my internet connection doesn,t have any problem or it's always connected.”
What our system reduces. If your device drops off, our server notices quickly and frees its place, so your platform can reconnect instead of hanging.
- Dead connections found and freedPrimary
- Straight back in after a dropPrimary
- Reconnect surges admitted in a steady streamSupporting
- Own separate connection to your brokerSupporting
Where it stops. We do not prevent internet drops or fix broker faults. After a disconnect, your platform logs in again, so always use broker-side stop-loss orders.
A firewall, router or ISP drops the platform's broker connection but lets ordinary web traffic through
“The MT5 trading server mt5.metaquotes.net runs on port 1950. We have closed all the "left" ports at our company, including port 1950.”
How our system handles it. Your platform connects to our server through its built-in SOCKS5 or HTTP proxy setting, and our server opens the broker connection from inside the datacenter.
- Built-in
SOCKS5loginPrimary - Own separate connection to your brokerPrimary
- Unanswered broker server gives up fast and reportsSupporting
Where it stops. Works only if your network still lets you reach our server. We cannot repair a faulty home router or an ISP outage.
Invalid account, Authorization failed and an empty broker server list
“Network 'xyzxyzxyz': authorization on FXView-Demo failed (Invalid account)”
Why a proxy does not change this. Traders Proxy forwards your platform’s traffic. It does not create, verify or fix your broker login.
Where it stops. If the Journal reports Invalid account or Authorization failed, your terminal reached the server and your login or server name needs checking.
cTrader will not log in from a cloud virtual machine (connection reset) or from one VPS network
“Hi 3 years later and i have the same problem on my azure windows 2022 servers.”
How local trading avoids it. You run your platform on your own computer, so there is no Windows server to set up or keep up.
- Platform stays on your own computerPrimary
Where it stops. Your platform runs on your own computer, so there is no remote Windows server to configure. We do not run cBots while your computer is off.
