Is a 300 ms ping to your broker normal and what to test
The short answer
A 300 ms ping to your broker is normal across continents but high within one region. Global carrier backbones average over 250 ms between Australia and London due to physical distance. Find your broker trade server location and test your route before assuming a network fault.
A 300 ms ping is normal when trading across continents
You click Buy or Close during a volatile candle and your chart hesitates. MetaTrader 4 (MT4) or MetaTrader 5 (MT5) displays a 300 ms ping in the corner. You wonder whether your connection is broken.
Ping measures the time required for a packet to travel to a destination and return. Physical distance sets the primary baseline for this round-trip duration.
| Between | Average round-trip duration |
|---|---|
| Within Europe | About 15 ms |
| Within North America | About 36 ms |
| London to New York | About 70 ms |
| Australia to the United States | About 152 ms |
| Singapore to the United Kingdom | About 156 ms |
| Australia to the United Kingdom | About 251 ms |
Source data from Verizon IP latency statistics between core backbone hubs. Your residential connection will add local transit time.
Compare your ping against the nearest geographical route. If you trade locally within Europe and see 300 ms, congested routing is adding unnecessary delay.
Physical distance creates a floor that no service can remove
Light travels through glass fibre at roughly 200 km every millisecond. Every 1,000 km between your terminal and the broker adds at least 10 ms to round-trip ping.
Real undersea cables follow indirect paths, and carrier switches add processing overhead. That makes theoretical speed limits an absolute floor rather than an expected daily reality.
If your ping sits near the transit minimum for that route, software cannot compress the distance. Understanding this prevents wasted effort on false fixes.
How to measure whether your latency is steady or erratic
A simple ping sample reveals whether high numbers stem from geographical distance or intermediate network congestion.
- 01
Identify your broker server host
In your desktop terminal, navigate to Tools → Options and check the Server tab to find your broker address.
- 02
Run thirty test pings across different hours
Open Command Prompt and enter
ping /n 30 BROKER_ADDRESSwithout port numbers. Note the minimum, maximum, and average response times.
Your lowest recorded number represents your route at its best. Large gaps between minimum and maximum readings indicate uneven packet delays and transit buffer queues.
If latency spikes only at specific times, intermediate internet paths are experiencing peak congestion rather than permanent hardware failures.
Three proven methods to address high latency
- Use a wired connection. An Ethernet cable eliminates wireless interference and packet loss. Testing wired against Wi-Fi confirms local router stability.
- Request a closer trade server. Many brokers operate secondary access points in different regional hubs. Ask support if your account can connect to a closer server.
- Host your platform near the broker. Placing execution software in the broker's data centre city removes distance entirely. A remote virtual private server handles unattended trading.
What Traders Proxy changes and what remains bound by physics
Traders Proxy works with any platform featuring a proxy setting, including MT4, MT5, TradingView Desktop, and Optuma.
When internet hops drop packets, standard protocols hold back subsequent data until the lost packet is resent. The farther your terminal sits from the broker, the longer each resend cycle takes.
Our server operates inside your broker's financial data centre city. Packets lost near the trade server recover locally inside that city. They do not cross international backbones again.
When server capacity is busy, trading traffic receives direct transmission priority. Packet loss on your home line still recovers between your computer and our server.
Traders Proxy does not promise lower ping because physical distance sets the floor. Configure your proxy values while markets are calm. If your broker prohibits proxies, do not use one.

Frequently asked questions
Is a 300 millisecond ping harmful for trading?
It depends entirely on your strategy. Swing traders rarely notice delays, whereas scalpers need tighter timing. Your trading style determines acceptable delay.
Will Traders Proxy reduce my ping?
No. Physical distance sets minimum ping, which software cannot compress. Traders Proxy recovers dropped packets locally inside your broker's city so your connection stays responsive.
Do brokers allow proxy connections?
Review your broker terms before connecting. Most brokers accept standard proxies, but some restrict them. Never use a proxy on accounts where prohibited.

Home Wi-Fi, router or modem drops that only cTrader seems to show
“From your description, it seems to be a network issue and not an app issue.”
Why a proxy does not change this. Traders Proxy can't fix your own Wi-Fi.
Where it stops. The 'dead connections found fast' row covers our server's side only. Never present it as a cure for Wi-Fi drops.
The platform's proxy setting does not cover everything (WebRequest, MQL5.community, Market)
“Using a SOCKS proxy in a browser, I can access the site without issues. Using the same proxy in the terminal, I still can't log in.”
Why a proxy does not change this. Only the trading app you set up uses Traders Proxy. Everything else stays on your normal internet.
- Only the app you set up is routedBoundary
Where it stops. Only the trading app you set up uses Traders Proxy. Expert Advisor web calls, custom DLLs and Market downloads may still use your normal internet.
Order timeouts, 3-minute hangs, 'Off quotes' and 'No connection' when closing
“10031 TRADE_RETCODE_CONNECTION No connection with the trade server”
Why a proxy does not change this. Traders Proxy doesn't change spreads, fills or requotes.
Where it stops. Off quotes, Requote and order timeouts are decided by your broker’s server, not by the proxy route.
A country or ISP blocks MQL5 / forex sites (Pakistan thread is about the website, not the trade link)
“Pakistan is actively blocking, banning, or restricting access to numerous forex apps/websites , so what you are describing is not coming from MQL5.com but from your side.”
Why a proxy does not change this. No claim. We don't promise access where a country or network provider blocks a service.
Where it stops. We don't help you reach websites, and some places restrict offshore trading altogether. Check your local rules.
