Why MT5 keeps disconnecting during trading and how to fix it

The short answer

If MetaTrader 5 (MT5) keeps disconnecting during trading, record the exact timestamp of every drop. Compare wired Ethernet against mobile data to isolate local Wi-Fi drops from broker server issues. Traders Proxy isolates your trading software and recovers dropped packets locally inside your broker's city.

Disconnections prevent trade management until MT5 reconnects

You click Buy or Close during a fast market move, and MetaTrader 5 (MT5) suddenly reports no connection. Live quotes stop updating while price action continues without you.

By the time MT5 reconnects, your planned entry or exit price is gone. Both MetaTrader 4 (MT4) and MT5 require one unbroken connection to your broker.

Ignoring repeated disconnects leaves your open positions exposed during high-impact releases. Diagnosing the route systematically shows who can fix the drop.

Why MT5 drops its persistent broker connection

MT5 maintains a single continuous connection to your broker's trade server. Any disruption along that network path severs the session.

The break can occur on your Wi-Fi, your router, your broadband provider, or the broker server. MT5 cannot name the culprit, so you test each link in order.

Five checks to isolate where your connection breaks

Work through these five diagnostic checks in order. Each test rules out one specific network component.

Five checks in order

  1. 01

    Log every disconnection event

Open the Journal tab inside the Toolbox. The log records every connection event with a precise timestamp. Note the time of each drop.

Timestamps reveal whether disconnects follow predictable schedules, such as market rollover.

  2. 02

    Check concurrent internet apps

Check whether web browser streams or voice calls stalled at the exact same minute. Simultaneous drops confirm local network failure.

  3. 03

    Trade over wired Ethernet

Run MT5 over a wired Ethernet cable for several sessions. If disconnects cease, local Wi-Fi interference was dropping packets.

  4. 04

    Test on mobile phone hotspot

Connect MT5 through your phone mobile data during active trading hours. If the connection holds, your home broadband provider is causing drops.

  5. 05

    Disable proxy for direct comparison

If using any proxy, untick Enable proxy server in settings. Run MT5 directly to confirm whether the proxy software is involved.

What your diagnostic results mean and how to fix them

  • Other apps dropped at the same time. Your router or local internet provider lost service. Restart your network equipment and report timestamps to your provider.
  • Disconnects stop on wired Ethernet. Your local Wi-Fi was dropping packets. Keep your trading machine plugged into a physical cable.
  • MT5 holds on mobile data and drops at home. Your home broadband routing is unstable. Share your Journal logs with your internet service provider.
  • Disconnects stop with proxy disabled. The proxy service has routing issues. Provide Journal timestamps to your proxy support team.
  • MT5 drops on all networks without a proxy. The fault sits with your broker server or account. Forward your Journal logs to broker support.
  • Disconnects occur at the same time daily. A scheduled task or rollover window is triggering resets. Inspect local router schedules and broker maintenance hours.
  • MT5 drops when another device connects. Your account permits only one concurrent session, or your device limit is reached. Review active sessions in your dashboard.
  • MT5 fails to connect entirely. Check your terminal build version. MetaQuotes ended support for builds below 4755, requiring an update to the current terminal.

Treat these results as strong pointers rather than definitive proof. Always test unexpected patterns across multiple market sessions.

How disconnects affect open orders and trailing stops

Stop-loss and take-profit orders reside directly on your broker's trade server. They remain active and enforceable even when your desktop terminal drops offline.

Trailing stops run locally inside your client terminal. They stop updating the moment MT5 loses its broker connection.

You cannot submit, modify, or close orders while disconnected. Maintain a backup access method, such as your broker phone app, during critical news events.

Troubleshooting slow login times in MetaTrader 5

Slow logins share the same underlying causes as disconnections. Test wired connections against wireless. Compare direct logins against proxy routes at the same hour of day.

If login duration matches across direct and proxy tests, your proxy does not affect login timing.

Mobile MT5 apps provide no built-in proxy configuration. On Android, a proxy utility can route MT5 traffic through Traders Proxy.

Where Traders Proxy helps and what it cannot change

You enter four values into MT5 proxy settings without installing local background applications. Only the trading app you set up uses Traders Proxy.

Our server operates in your broker's financial data centre city, maintaining a direct connection to the broker. Dropped packets on that stretch recover locally inside that city.

When server capacity experiences high load, our servers prioritise packets directed to trading ports. Dropped connections clear quickly so your platform reconnects cleanly.

Your platform can reconnect immediately from your network up to your plan limit. This prevents hanging reconnect cycles during volatile market sessions.

Traders Proxy cannot prevent disconnects caused by local home line failures. We do not promise lower ping because physical distance sets the floor.

Configure your proxy values while markets are calm. If your broker prohibits proxies, do not use one.

When to choose a VPS instead of a proxy

A virtual private server keeps trading robots running when your computer is powered off. Traders Proxy routes desktop traffic while your machine is on.

Frequently asked questions

Why doesn’t Traders Proxy prevent all MT5 disconnects?

Disconnections can originate from local hardware failures or broker maintenance. Traders Proxy recovers dropped packets inside your broker's city. It also frees dead sockets quickly so MT5 reconnects smoothly.

What happens to open orders during an MT5 disconnect?

Stop-loss and take-profit orders sit on the broker trade server and remain active. Trailing stops operate within local terminal software and stop updating when offline.

How many disconnects should a trader tolerate?

Healthy retail trading connections should experience zero disconnects during normal trading hours. Log every occurrence for a week and share the findings with your provider.

Does a VPS prevent broker disconnects?

A VPS isolates execution from your home line, but cannot prevent downtime at the broker trade server. Review our VPS comparison to evaluate tradeoffs.

How do I test slow MT5 mobile logins?

Time your login on Wi-Fi and compare against mobile phone data on the same device. On Android, outbound proxy apps can route MT5 traffic through Traders Proxy.

Do brokers permit proxy connections?

Review your broker terms before connecting. If your broker prohibits proxies, do not use one. Your broker sees our server IP address in its own data centre city.

MetaTrader 4 & 5Reduces one factor

'Ping failed' and drops with disconnects every few minutes, re-login loops and dropped sessions

“Is the chart freezing, or is it the terminal? If it is the terminal, then it is likely a broken indicator.”

What our system reduces. If your device drops off, our server notices quickly and frees its place, so your platform can reconnect instead of hanging.

  • Dead connections found and freedPrimary
  • Straight back in after a dropPrimary
  • Reconnect surges admitted in a steady streamSupporting
  • Own separate connection to your brokerSupporting

Where it stops. We do not prevent internet drops or fix broker faults. After a disconnect, your platform logs in again, so always use broker-side stop-loss orders.

MetaTrader 4 & 5Solves

A firewall, router or ISP drops the platform's broker connection but lets ordinary web traffic through

“Access to 443 ports is usually available in proxy servers.”

How our system handles it. Your platform connects to our server through its built-in SOCKS5 or HTTP proxy setting, and our server opens the broker connection from inside the datacenter.

  • Built-in SOCKS5 loginPrimary
  • Own separate connection to your brokerPrimary
  • Unanswered broker server gives up fast and reportsSupporting

Where it stops. Works only if your network still lets you reach our server. We cannot repair a faulty home router or an ISP outage.

MetaTrader 4 & 5Not a proxy problem

Invalid account, Authorization failed and an empty broker server list

“Network 'xyzxyzxyz': authorization on FXView-Demo failed (Invalid account)”

Why a proxy does not change this. Traders Proxy forwards your platform’s traffic. It does not create, verify or fix your broker login.

Where it stops. If the Journal reports Invalid account or Authorization failed, your terminal reached the server and your login or server name needs checking.

TelegramNot a proxy problem

Telegram (trade-signal channels) blocked or throttled by an ISP, state or office firewall

“MTProxy allows users to circumvent internet censorship that restricts Telegram access in certain regions. It does so by masking Telegram's IP and obfuscating user traffic, making it significantly harder for ISPs and governments to detect outgoing connections pointing to Telegram servers.”

Why a proxy does not change this. Telegram in one tap on every plan. Telegram’s own proxy type is included on the 2-device and 5-device plans.

  • Telegram in one tapBoundary

Where it stops. Telegram in one tap on every plan, plus Telegram’s own proxy type on the 2-device and 5-device plans. A network that inspects traffic can still block it.
